Ingredients

6 large russet potatoes (peeled and cubed)
1/2 cup butter (unsalted)
3/4 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sour cream
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: 1-2 cloves garlic (minced) for garlic-flavored mashed potatoes

Equipment

  • Large pot for boiling potatoes
  • Medium-sized mixing bowl
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Method

Boil the Potatoes: Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt to the water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
Drain the Potatoes: Once cooked, drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Let them sit for a minute to steam off any remaining moisture.
Mash the Potatoes: Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until mostly smooth (a few lumps add texture!). For a smoother texture, use a hand mixer.
Add Butter and Cream: Slowly add the butter, sour cream, and heavy cream to the potatoes. Continue mashing or mixing until the ingredients are well incorporated, and the potatoes are smooth and creamy.
Season to Taste: Add salt and pepper to taste. You can also mix in garlic for extra flavor, or leave it plain.
